THE SHEILA STORIES
Can the power of story mend a broken heart?
Thomas is a widower with two young daughters. His wife died years ago, but he still talks to her every day and keeps her picture nearby. As a single father, he does his best, works hard at his job, shops, cooks, and cleans. But sometimes he thinks it would be nice to have a woman around, not for him, but for his daughters, a woman they could learn from and admire.
That’s why he starts telling them the Sheila Stories. The stories begin in Australia in 1935. Sheila is a fearless lover of adventure. She buys a farm and learns to ride and shoot. During World War II, she meets a soldier and falls in love. Eventually, she moves to America.
To raise extra money, Thomas rents out their spare apartment to a young single woman. Thomas likes the woman, and she likes him, but he cannot love her because he has a broken heart. So the woman moves away.
A depressed Thomas returns to the Sheila Stories. He tells the girls of Sheila’s spirit and determination, and as he continues, the girls begin to wonder if the power of story can heal a broken heart.
